MCR Gazette / Michaelmas Week 8

Young-Winston-Churchill-001Today is the anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill’s birthday. To mark the occasion, here is an excerpt from his 80th birthday speech:

“It was a nation and race dwelling all round the globe that had the lion heart. I had the luck to be called upon to give the roar. I also hope that I sometimes suggested to the lion the right places to use his claws. I am now nearing the end of my journey. I hope I still have some services to render. However that may be and whatever may befall, I am sure I shall never forget the emotions of this day or be able to express my gratitude to those colleagues and companions with whom I have lived my life for this superb honour they have done me”.

Have a superb week!

Guest Night (Dec 7)

Our upcoming end-of-term bash will be one of epic proportions: a three-course dinner, followed by entertainment including a casino, live music, a silent disco and even a bouncy castle. There are already over two hundred people signed up to the event – trust me, you really should not miss this! Churchill has the largest capacity hall in Cambridge, so feel free to extend the invitation to your friends and colleagues in other colleges.

These are available to pick up in the Porter’s Lodge, for those who have ordered these.

College wireless network unavailable on Monday (Dec 2)

As part of our migration to the University’s managed wireless system, we need to reconfigure how the wireless network called “CHURCHILL COLLEGE” functions internally. We will be carrying out this work on Monday 2nd December, between 2:00pm and 3:00pm. While the work is in progress the wireless network in College buildings (including the Libraries and the Buttery) will not be available. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Improv from the Crypt (Dec 3)

3rd-7th Dec, 9:30pm
Corpse Playroom

Join the Cambridge Impronauts for an evening of untold terror, laughter and music as they take the world of horror, spin it around, kick it down the stairs and stick a moustache on it. Audience suggestions give lifeblood to a monstrous creation, meaning that a new tale of woe is constructed every single night.

Scream as the Archmage Dung Beetle unleashes an army of resurrected fridges to blast a hole in the Boyzone layer. Cry out in horror as the Devil himself takes on the Corpus Chronophage at Connect Four to see who will gain custody of George Lucas’ soul. Cackle with malevolent glee as the mutated form of Alan Sugar’s head transplanted onto the body of a tapir runs amuck in Norman Bates’ kitchen.

Cam FM Grad Christmas Party @ Lola Lo (Dec 9)

Freelance language work for graduate students

Semos is a UK-based language consultancy. Since March 2006, we have been delivering integrated language services to clients in the UK, Europe and beyond.

What are integrated language services?

Our work is varied. You might translate a menu from Czech into English for a small restaurant in Brno. Or 20 pages of construction engineering manuals from Dutch into English.  Or proofread an English translation of a Catalan short story. Or check the English language version of a Russian political website for grammatical errors and lexical or idiomatic infelicities. We can do a lot. But everything we do is governed by a simple principle: quality. We would never return anything that we felt could be improved upon.

Whom do we want?

We want linguists. A linguist is someone who knows what language is, what it means and how it works. Writers, editors, proofreaders and translators are all linguists. A linguist does not, necessarily, need to be a speaker or student of foreign languages. We are interested in hearing from people who combine linguistic acumen with a grasp of or a willingness to acquire technical vocabulary from various spheres.

You should also:

  • Be an appropriately qualified professional, academic, graduate, postgraduate at an elite university
  • Have a 2:2 degree or higher
  • Be able to write fluently and accurately in English and/or your native language

These are not strict eligibility criteria. If you have something to offer,
we would like to hear from you. You should be contactable by e-mail and telephone.

What do you get?

  • High-quality, varied work.
  • Flexibility. You would be a self-employed freelancer, and would not be obliged to accept any single piece of work.
  • Support. You will be able to refer problematic specialist terminology to specialist editors.

Those interested should register with us online via http://www.semoslanguageservices.com/page27.htm.

Carols for Churchill Christmas Formal

I’m looking for a few singers to lead the carols during Christmas formal.  If you haven’t been to a Christmas formal before (or can’t remember), a few carols are usually sung at the start of the dessert course, with a small ‘choir’ just to get things going.  We would have a run through just ahead of the formal, but nothing more. If you’re interested, let me know (bs461).

Cam FM Grad Guest List

This year Cam FM have once again negotiated great discounts for grads at club nights.
To be eligible for these discounts for this year all you need to do is be a grad student and put your name on our “Grad Guest List” here:

http://new.camfm.co.uk/news/whats-on/2013/10/13/grad-guest-list/

Every week by being on the Cam FM Grad Guest List you will be entitled to the discounts listed at the link above (make sure you state clearly to the door staff that you are on the “Cam FM Grad Guest List” otherwise you may only get regular student deals)

If you have friends that you think would like to add themselves to the guest list, direct them to the link above and ask them to fill in their details. This is especially important for any grads that don’t have the GU logo on their cards (Vets, medics & some other taught courses).

If you would like to book a table for any of the nights list at the above link, please get in touch with Phil Ashworth directly to ensure you get grad discounts (email:phil.ashworth@camfm.co.uk). If you want to book a table for our Halloween party please get in touch ASAP as we expect them to sell out fast!

Churchill College University Challenge Team

We’re in the progress of picking a team for University Challenge 2014. If you’re interested, could you send me an email (Kyle Lam: kkyl2@cam.ac.uk), telling me your subject area, any areas you feel you are strong in and also any relevant experience. I’ll be in touch very shortly with regards to trials. Do get in touch asap as the deadline is fast approaching.
