Cambridge Interview Hosts and Invigilators

Please direct any queries about this message to schools.liaison@chu.cam.ac.uk (not the Tutorial Office)

Dear All,

As the interview period is approaching, we are writing to you to request assistance in administrating this process. Help from our postgraduate and undergraduate students is always crucial to ensure the smooth running of this busy time. You are our best ambassadors, and we know that candidates have been encouraged and reassured by our students’ help in the past. Student helpers will be paid by the hour for their work.

This year, our interviews and at-interview assessments will again be running entirely remotely. We therefore require remote, online assistance from our helpers. As always, however, this is a demanding role that requires a hospitable and professional demeanour. You will be paid ambassadors for the college who will need to be able to assist people who may feel nervous and vulnerable. It will require attention to detail, diligence, and a stable internet connection.

Primarily, we will require ‘Hosts’ and ‘Invigilators’. The duties will be roughly as follows:

Remote Interview Hosts:

  • Actively Monitor Waiting Room
  • Admit Interviewers, deal with tech queries and assign them to a breakout room
  • Welcome and reassure candidates
  • Check candidates’ sound/vision in both directions
  • Check candidates’ ID
  • Give candidates password for pre-interview reading (if necessary) at correct time
  • Monitor candidates during pre-interview tasks (if necessary)
  • End pre-interview reading at appropriate time (if necessary)
  • Monitor meeting participant list/liaise with interviewers as to when to send next candidate to breakout room for interview
  • Deal with help requests from interviewers
  • Liaise with the Admissions Office regarding any late candidates/other issues
  • Potentially take on a new schedule at the last minute in case of illness

Remote Assessment Invigilators:

  • Actively Monitor Waiting Room
  • Admit candidates
  • Welcome and reassure candidates
  • Check candidates’ sound/vision in both directions
  • Check candidates’ ID
  • Give candidates clear instructions as to assessment length, format and periodic 360 degree observations
  • Answer candidate queries
  • Liaise with the Admissions Office regarding any late candidates/other issues
  • Give candidates clear instructions at assessment end regarding upload etc.

This is just an overview: more details and full instructions will follow, if you are able and chosen to help us.

If you are interested in working as part of our interview team this year, please fill out the following questionnaire with your availability over the period.

Availability Survey for prospective Invigilators/Interview Hosts

Please fill out the questionnaire by Wednesday 10/11/21 at the latest. Please also note that filling out the questionnaire is not a guarantee that work will be offered to you. Priority will be given to those are able to commit substantial amounts of time to the interview period, but we will be pleased to receive any offer of help, particularly for our busier days.

After you have filled in the survey, we will aim let you know which, if any, slots we have assigned you to, by Wednesday 17th November.

If your availability changes, please let us know as soon as possible by emailing schools.liaison@chu.cam.ac.uk.

Thank you in advance for all your help.

Best Wishes,

Sandy Mill

Around the University

David Nicholson – a man of many careers

Davidson Nicol: a man of many careers

Professor Davidson Nicol CMG (1924-1994) was a truly remarkable figure: a polymath and pioneer who was the first Black African to graduate with first class honours and to hold a Fellowship at the University of Cambridge. As a scientist he worked on the structure of insulin and its breakdown in the human body, but he was also a novelist, biographer and poet. He served as Principal of Fourah Bay College in his home country of Sierra Leone, before becoming the nation’s permanent representative at the United Nations, High Commissioner to the UK and ultimately Under-Secretary General of the UN.

This event will bring together some of his friends and family to discuss his amazing life and legacy.
