The Polygeia Annual Conference 2019

SYMBLS 2019 Graduate Symposium for Biological & Life Sciences – 15 November

SymBLS is a multidisciplinary life science symposium organised by University of Cambridge PhD students. Since 2006, SymBLS has brought together students and renowned keynote speakers to explore trending topics in life sciences. Current students will have the opportunity to give oral and poster presentations and enter our image competitions. This year we are looking forward to keynote addresses from Dr Ramanujan Hegde (FRS; LMB, Cambridge), Dr Tim Weil (University of Cambridge), Dr Sandrine Thuret (King’s College London), Dr Graeme Smith (Artios Pharma) and Lakechia Jeanne (founder of Girls in Science). The theme of the symposium centres on the perception of failure in academic science, and as such we will conclude the day with a panel discussion on this topic which we
anticipate will inspire much debate.

The ‘Brilliant’ Club Tutoring Positions Availabl

This is a joint message from The Brilliant Club and The University of Cambridge about the opportunity for you to work as a PhD tutor in 2019-20.

This is an opportunity we greatly encourage you to find out more about, you can do so by joining one of The Brilliant Club’s short information webinars which will be taking place at regular intervals over the coming months – register interest here.

Through working as a tutor on The Scholars Programme, you will:

•          Join a community of over 1200 researchers working to make access to university fair   for school pupils from underrepresented backgrounds

•          Develop teaching experience through small group tutorial delivery

•          Receive high-quality training and support

•          Enhance your employability skills

•          Disseminate your research to a unique, non-expert audience in the local community

•          Be paid £500 per placement

There will be an Assessment Centre at the University of Cambridge on 12th December so please make sure you apply at least two weeks beforehand.

Thanksgiving lunch

You may not be at home for the holidays but you’re not alone – bring your friends and join your fellow Americans to eat, drink and be merry together. Now in its twentieth year, our traditional Thanksgiving lunch includes turkey and pumpkin pie, as well as live music. Come and enjoy the holiday with us for only £13.

Students of all nationalities are welcome.

Sustainable Development: Leveraging the Small for Big Impact

‘What can a small NGO do to generate sustainable impact in the development world?’

We are Cambridge Development Initiative (CDI – www.cambridgedevelopment.org), a student-run charity doing community-based development work in Tanzania. We are hosting an event so you can find out more about what we do, followed by a panel discussion on the topic of ‘leveraging the small for big impact’.
Our diverse panel consists of both a mixture of development practitioners and development researchers. We hope their combined experience in the practice and theory behind international development will make for stimulating discussion on this topic and development practices in general.
This is a highly valuable event to learn about unique volunteering opportunities in Cambridge, and those interested in working for small NGOs in the future!
We are opening recruitment for Executive Committee positions soon, namely: Deputy Director (External); Education Project Director; Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Director; and Treasurer. Details to follow.
Our Speakers:
Taskeen Adam
Taskeen Adam is a Cambridge-Africa Scholar pursuing a Ph.D. on ‘The role of African Massive Open Online Courses in supporting the most marginalised’. Taskeen pioneered Solar Powered Learning in South Africa and Mobile Education for Smart Technologies in India. She was chosen as one of M&G top 200 Young South Africans in 2014.
Mike Noyes:
Head of Policy & Programmes at ActionAid and previous Head of Humanitarian Responses at ActionAid. He has worked and written widely on humanitarian crises, dealing in conjunction with the UN and a variety of national and international humanitarian and international development organisations.’
Tom Nott 
Tom Nott is a 3rd year geographer at Cambridge, looking to pursue a career path which will tackle global issues such as climate change, inequality and extreme poverty. Tom has been a project worker and logistics officer with EPAfrica, and is currently undertaking consultancy training with ShARE Cambridge.
Nafisa Waziri
Nafisa Waziri is a member of the Development Studies department in Cambridge, pursuing a Ph.D on ‘An analysis of complexity in development programmes – a case study of the Nigerian education sector.’ Nafisa has been actively engaged in international development projects for the past seven years, including participating in research for WHO Water Safety Plans, and project managing for Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

Cambridge Admission Office Session Leader Recruitment

 Cambridge Admissions Office wants to let you know that recruitment for Session Leaders to our Postgraduate Outreach Scheme is open from Monday 14th October until noon on Friday 29th November.

Session Leaders are deployed across the University to design, plan and deliver engaging academic session to young people aged 11-18. This opportunity is open to all PhD students with at least 2 years left to study and is a great opportunity for post-graduates to gain teaching experience and work across college’s, departments and in recruitment and outreach for the Cambridge Admissions Office.

PhD Photoshoot

Following the success of the PhD photoshoots in the summer, the Cambridge Admissions Office is looking for Postgraduate student volunteers willing to pose in a new set of pictures depicting graduate life in Cambridge. The photos will be used in promotional material relating to Cambridge Postgraduate admissions, particularly the website, social media channels and the Postgraduate Guide.

Volunteers who are chosen to participate and attend the photo day will be automatically entered into the random prize draw. The draw will be facilitated by two members of the Cambridge Admissions Office. The winners will be notified by email.
