Yoga
Join our weekly yoga class! Whether your an experienced yogi or have never been on a mat before, anyone is welcome to join. We provide mats, but please bring your own if you have one.

Thanksgiving Formal
The time has come to celebrate this year’s bountiful harvest among cherished friends and college family. You are cordially invited to Thanksgiving Formal on Thursday, 24 November at 7:30 PM in Hall.

Christmas Party
Attend the MCR Christmas formal, followed by a Christmas party in the Vicious Penguin, on November 30th. We figured if we celebrated Christmas in November, we would be able to thwart the Grinch’s plans to try to steal it.

CHUTalks: Call for Presenters
Churchill MCR organises fortnightly CHUTalks; informal seminars run by the MCR for the MCR. These CHUTalks are a great way for you to get practice with presenting and show your friends what your research is all about. The talks themselves are typically held on Thursdays at 7 pm in the Tizard room.
PhD and Masters students are welcome to apply. The talk is meant to be 20-25 minutes long and aimed at a general audience (keeping in mind that the audience members are not professionals in your field). After the presentation, there will be a small discussion, which is always very friendly. There will be cheese and wine with other snacks and non-alcoholic drinks for those who attend.

ChuSciSoc: A circular economy powered by sunlight
Chaplain
At the end of this year, the Rev’d Dr John Rawlinson is retiring after 25 years as Chaplain to the Chapel at Churchill College. In that time, John has conducted baptisms, weddings, and funerals for many members of the College, as well as weekly services during termtimes. John’s final service will be the Advent Carol Service, at 17:30 on Sunday 27 November.
The Trustees are delighted to announce the appointment of the Rev’d Canon Professor Nigel Cooper, some University Chaplain to Anglia Ruskin University, as Chaplain to the Chapel for a period of two years from January. As well as a theologian, Canon Nigel is an environmental scientist with a particular interest in environmental economics.
Portrait of a Landscape

Written by Paula Laycock (former College Registrar) with the advice and expertise of John Moore, Head of Grounds & Gardens, Portrait of a Landscape is a sumptuous chronicle of the grounds and gardens over the past sixty years. There are 200 pages of historical record detailing the landscaping of the site, peppered with observations and recollections from current and former students, Fellows and staff, as well as contributions from others who have been involved in the grounds and gardens over the years. With short stories about key events and people, too, it’s a good read!

Snapshots of Women in COG
Scientific excellence during the COVID-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 Genomics UK Consortium (COG-UK) are releasing a limited edition of the book “Snapshots of Women in COG: Scientific excellence during the COVID-19 pandemic” to recognise and celebrate the success of COG-UK and its various contributors. We would like to invite you to the book launch event, all event attendees will receive a free copy of the book.
The book features a collection of first person, biographical style write-ups of several COG-UK contributors, outlining their journey into a career in science/healthcare/research, challenges faced along the way, personal anecdotes, and their role during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Luca D’Agliano Scholarship
The Scholarship is open to a registered Postgraduate Student of any College who is pursuing a course of research in the area of development economics. In considering students for the award of the Scholarship, the Awarders are required to have regard to their financial need and also to their academic merit. A Scholarship is tenable for one year and a Scholar is eligible for re-election. The award may be used either to support expenses in Cambridge, or for fieldwork expenses elsewhere. The present value of the award is up to a maximum of £1000.

University Counselling Service: Groups and Workshops
University Counselling Service runs three kinds of groups at UCS – workshops, focused groups and longer counselling groups.
The workshops are generally one-off events and do not require any ongoing commitment. The focused groups are for people who want help with a particular issue. Longer counselling groups offer support over a period of several weeks. To ensure a group experience, they aim to run groups and workshops of six participants or more and if there are insufficient numbers to run a group or workshop it may be cancelled.

All of the workshops apart from the ‘How Art Thou’ one, will be held remotely, online via Zoom.us (The How Art Thou workshop will be held in the Student Services Centre and in person.)

Merck KGaA Darmstadt Germany Innovation Cup 2023
From June, 10th – June, 16th 2023, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany will be hosting the Innovation Cup Summer Camp. The Innovation Cup is an initiative for post-graduate students in natural sciences, computer sciences, and business administration to attend a training program near Frankfurt, Germany. All travel, food and accommodation expenses are paid by us.
The Innovation Cup is designed to support the professional development of post-graduate students interested in the pharmaceutical and chemical industry. Participants learn how R&D in the industry works by lectures from Merck managers and scientists. The students will also advance an idea to a full project plan with their teams. The event brings together a promising new generation of talent with senior managers and researchers and accomplished retirees in a meeting of the generations. It also provides a unique chance to network with the brightest students from all around the world. Teams will work on innovative projects in the areas of: Oncology, Autoimmunity, Medicinal Chemistry, Protein Engineering, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Neuromorphic Computing and Smart Manufacturing. At the first day of the summer camp a conference with alumni from previous editions will be organized.
Postdocs and post-graduate students on their way towards a PhD in biology, chemistry, physics, medicine, biotechnology, computer sciences, data sciences, biochemistry, pharmacy, engineering or related fields are invited to apply. In addition, advanced MBA students or recent MBA graduates with an interest in the pharmaceutical and chemical business and a background in natural sciences or computer and data are also eligible.
The participating teams have the chance to win the Innovation Cup award endowed with EUR 20,000 for the most convincing project plan, plus EUR 5,000 and EUR 3,000 for the runner-ups.

“Our team was like a small company, working together to achieve a common goal”By joining a Medical i-Team, you will work for a term with postgraduates from across the University and a dedicated industry mentor. You will receive training from industry experts and investigate the commercial potential and user requirements of a real Cambridge medical invention, gaining hands-on skills and experience.

Applications are welcomed from post-docs and postgraduates from any discipline. No previous medical or commercial background is required. Lent Term projects:1. The programme includes regular group sessions, team meetings and individual work. i-Teams present their final recommendations to a business and academic audience at the end of the term. The course will run at the IfM on Monday evenings from January 16th with a final presentation session on March 16th.

UK Environmental Policy Workshop
Join Andy Jordan, Professor of Environmental Policy in the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at UEA where he will be sharing his expertise in a workshop centred around environmental policy especially in the context of the UK post-Brexit
Professor Jordan is the author of several books on the European Union’s environmental policy making, including The Tools of Policy Formulation. He has advised the OECD, the UK Cabinet Office, DEFRA, the European Commission, WWF and the RSPB.In 2015-16 he advised the UK Parliamentary environmental audit committee inquiry on the EU referendum and in 2016-20 served on the Scientific Committee of the European Environment Agency. He currently sits on DEFRA’s Science Advisory Council: Social Science Expert Group.
