Yoga
Join our weekly yoga class! Whether your an experienced yogi or have never been on a mat before, anyone is welcome to join. We provide mats, but please bring your own if you have one.
We’re in the Jock Colville Hall every Wednesday from 6 – 7pm.
CHUTalks: Call for Presenters
Churchill MCR organises fortnightly CHUTalks; informal seminars run by the MCR for the MCR. These CHUTalks are a great way for you to get practice with presenting and show your friends what your research is all about. The talks themselves are typically held on Thursdays at 7 pm in the Tizard room.
PhD and Masters students are welcome to apply. The talk is meant to be 20-25 minutes long and aimed at a general audience (keeping in mind that the audience members are not professionals in your field). After the presentation, there will be a small discussion, which is always very friendly. There will be cheese and wine with other snacks and non-alcoholic drinks for those who attend.

Do you need more motivation?
A mid-winter College photo competition is run over the winter holiday period! Any current Churchill Students, Staff or Fellows are warmly invited to take part, including Partners or Family Members living on the College site.
Categories:
- Category 1: Holiday – Images celebrating the holiday season, that are visually connected to the College in some way
- Category 2: Nature – Images of the College’s grounds and gardens
- Category 3: Community – Images of people at Churchill College
- Category 4: Your favourite memory of Churchill College – Images submitted in this category can have been taken at any point in the last 12 months
You can submit one entry per category for consideration. You are welcome to send multiple images, if you are happy for them to be shared on College platforms, but if you do this, please remember to identify the specific image you would like to be considered. If you would like to submit an entry for more than one category, please send a separate email with your entry for each category.
A selection of branded College stash prizes will be awarded to the winner and runner-up in each category. The winners will be announced in the College Community News due to go out at the end of January 2023.

Portrait of a Landscape

Written by Paula Laycock (former College Registrar) with the advice and expertise of John Moore, Head of Grounds & Gardens, Portrait of a Landscape is a sumptuous chronicle of the grounds and gardens over the past sixty years. There are 200 pages of historical record detailing the landscaping of the site, peppered with observations and recollections from current and former students, Fellows and staff, as well as contributions from others who have been involved in the grounds and gardens over the years. With short stories about key events and people, too, it’s a good read!

Oppenheimer Research Fellow
Applications are invited for an Ernest Oppenheimer Early Career Research Fellowship to be held at Cambridge University in Colloid Science, as broadly interpreted within the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, materials science and engineering.
These Fellowships are intended to provide an opportunity for independent research, though the holders usually work in collaboration with an established research group. Applications are encouraged from researchers who will have completed a PhD by 1 October 2023 and have normally spent not more than three years after a PhD viva or defense in post-doctoral research by 1 October 2023.

The profile and importance of the life science sector has never been higher, with the Covid-19 pandemic accelerating drug discovery and novel treatments, and reshaping society’s view and trust of healthcare technologies. The role of AI bespoke methods and network analysis to uncover hidden pathways and reposition drugs for use in treatments is one example of the positive impacts this interdisciplinary convergence of life science and AI/Machine Learning can have on developing the transformative therapies of the future.
Event aims
The aim of this event is to discuss how AI and machine learning are transforming the clinical pathway from reducing drug discovery timeframes and improving early detection diagnostics, to enabling more efficient clinical trials that benefit patient treatments and outcomes. The panel event will be held online via Zoom to widen participation in the event.
Snapshots of Women in COG
Scientific excellence during the COVID-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 Genomics UK Consortium (COG-UK) are releasing a limited edition of the book “Snapshots of Women in COG: Scientific excellence during the COVID-19 pandemic” to recognise and celebrate the success of COG-UK and its various contributors. We would like to invite you to the book launch event, all event attendees will receive a free copy of the book.
The book features a collection of first person, biographical style write-ups of several COG-UK contributors, outlining their journey into a career in science/healthcare/research, challenges faced along the way, personal anecdotes, and their role during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Luca D’Agliano Scholarship
The Scholarship is open to a registered Postgraduate Student of any College who is pursuing a course of research in the area of development economics. In considering students for the award of the Scholarship, the Awarders are required to have regard to their financial need and also to their academic merit. A Scholarship is tenable for one year and a Scholar is eligible for re-election. The award may be used either to support expenses in Cambridge, or for fieldwork expenses elsewhere. The present value of the award is up to a maximum of £1000.

University Counselling Service: Groups and Workshops
University Counselling Service runs three kinds of groups at UCS – workshops, focused groups and longer counselling groups.
The workshops are generally one-off events and do not require any ongoing commitment. The focused groups are for people who want help with a particular issue. Longer counselling groups offer support over a period of several weeks. To ensure a group experience, they aim to run groups and workshops of six participants or more and if there are insufficient numbers to run a group or workshop it may be cancelled.

All of the workshops apart from the ‘How Art Thou’ one, will be held remotely, online via Zoom.us (The How Art Thou workshop will be held in the Student Services Centre and in person.)

Merck KGaA Darmstadt Germany Innovation Cup 2023
From June, 10th – June, 16th 2023, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany will be hosting the Innovation Cup Summer Camp. The Innovation Cup is an initiative for post-graduate students in natural sciences, computer sciences, and business administration to attend a training program near Frankfurt, Germany. All travel, food and accommodation expenses are paid by us.
The Innovation Cup is designed to support the professional development of post-graduate students interested in the pharmaceutical and chemical industry. Participants learn how R&D in the industry works by lectures from Merck managers and scientists. The students will also advance an idea to a full project plan with their teams. The event brings together a promising new generation of talent with senior managers and researchers and accomplished retirees in a meeting of the generations. It also provides a unique chance to network with the brightest students from all around the world. Teams will work on innovative projects in the areas of: Oncology, Autoimmunity, Medicinal Chemistry, Protein Engineering, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Neuromorphic Computing and Smart Manufacturing. At the first day of the summer camp a conference with alumni from previous editions will be organized.
Postdocs and post-graduate students on their way towards a PhD in biology, chemistry, physics, medicine, biotechnology, computer sciences, data sciences, biochemistry, pharmacy, engineering or related fields are invited to apply. In addition, advanced MBA students or recent MBA graduates with an interest in the pharmaceutical and chemical business and a background in natural sciences or computer and data are also eligible.
The participating teams have the chance to win the Innovation Cup award endowed with EUR 20,000 for the most convincing project plan, plus EUR 5,000 and EUR 3,000 for the runner-ups.

“Our team was like a small company, working together to achieve a common goal”By joining a Medical i-Team, you will work for a term with postgraduates from across the University and a dedicated industry mentor. You will receive training from industry experts and investigate the commercial potential and user requirements of a real Cambridge medical invention, gaining hands-on skills and experience.

The programme includes regular group sessions, team meetings and individual work. i-Teams present their final recommendations to a business and academic audience at the end of the term. The course will run at the IfM on Monday evenings from January 16th with a final presentation session on March 16th.

2023 CSAR Student Award
The Cambridge Society for the Application of Research is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for the 2023 CSAR Student Award programme.

The CSAR PhD Student Award of £1000, is intended to recognise outstanding research with real world application and to assist students to pursue their research or careers.
